Cardi's Furniture & Mattresses, Wareham, Mass.

  • Connie Post and her team at Affordable Design Solutions transfromed a 62,000-sq.-ft. former Lowes Home Improvement store in Wareham, Mass., into the new home of Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses.
  • Post transformed one half of a 22-ft, load-bearing firewall that separates the first 4,000 sq. ft. of this former home improvement store from the rest of the interior into an urban industrial warehouse façade with enormous sliding barn doors and faux brick wallpaper.
  • The other half of the massive load-bearing wall became a Disney-esque version of a regionally appropriate beach house. “The first few thousand feet of any retail space has to deliver an immediate wow,” Post says. “The moment you walk into Cardi’s, you know it isn’t your father’s furniture store.”
  • Wayfinding is easy for shoppers thanks to open site lines and a visually dramatic central hub, highlighted by a blue, circular cornice, a cluster of drum shades overhead and string curtains.
  • Casually sophisticated lifestyle vignettes are supported by large-scale beach scene graphics that lend a sense of authenticity and place.
  • A fireplace surrounded by stacked wood lends modern, masculine appeal to the leather furniture area.
  • The youth area at Cardi’s Furniture is a trademarked Post design, featuring brightly colored Chinese lanterns suspended from doors hanging from the ceiling. A bright magenta entry and fun vignettes make the department pop.
