Lombard, Ill.-based The RoomPlace recently opened its new format RP Outlet one floor below the mall-based The RoomPlace in Peoria, Ill. Designed by Connie Post, CEO of Affordable Design Solutions, the outlet focuses on value-oriented product at starting price points set in youthful, colorful, modern displays.

Shoppers enter the new RP Outlet located one floor beneath the mall-based The Roomplace store in Peoria, IL via a glass-fronted garage door and are greeted by brightly colored banners overhead touting messages like “Trend Without Spend.” Banners, cool graphics and the focal-point mural at the end of the aisle set the tone and reinforce the brand’s color scheme for a cohesive look.
The look at RP Outlet designed by retail strategist Connie Post is clean and industrial, as evidenced by the RP Outlet check-out desk faced with durable vinyl wood flooring. A different faux wood flooring pattern decorates the wall behind the lit RP Outlet logo.
“RP Outlet is in no way a clearance center,” according to Bruce Berman, owner and chairman of The Roomplace. “We’re buying specifically for this format, rather than selling off ‘as-is’ or discontinued merchandise.” Here, area rugs are displayed in rolling wooden crates and cardboard barrels to encourage cash-and-carry.
While the entire space is designed to be flexible (“We’re currently leading with upholstery, but could easily change to bedroom if we choose,” Post says), color is a unifying element. Youth bedroom targets pre-teens and guest or second bedroom customers with oversize artist-created murals with a crisp, modern vibe and color that “emotionally excites whatever your age.”
Funky fruit and vegetable-themed murals add artistic flair and fun to the dinette category. A wide blue-stained aisle, again consistent with the brand’s color scheme, draws shoppers through the fresh and modern space.
To encourage impulse buys, accent chairs are elevated for emphasis on sheet metal-topped pallets down the center aisle of the store, seen here from the opposite angle of the garage door entrance. Warehouse-style lighting, the dramatic, oversized modern mural and movable slat walls on wheels emphasize the industrial chic feel of the space while maintaining clear sight lines.

"As time has gone on, we've found that a very high percentage of our business at The RoomPlace is coming from much higher price points," said Bruce Berman, owner and chairman of the Top 100 company. "That's not a bad thing, but we felt that we had abandoned the so-called $399 sofa customer. We believed that we would be in a better position to growth that part of our business if we opened a dedicated store."

Red leather sofa looks hip positioned in front of a dynamic graffiti-inspired mural. “The work of graffiti and tattoo artists is being recognized in art galleries around the world,” Post says. “The look is modern and consistent with what’s happening in fashion and what consumers see every day beyond the world of furniture.”
